Jack of all but the need for a master of one

When an organisation makes a decision on a marketing technology stack, they then scramble to seek talent with the appropriate skills and specific product certifications for that particular technology stack.

As the Marketing Automation industry continues to mature, generalists who’ve had ‘exposure’ to Marketing Automation platforms will simply not suffice. Organisations need candidates who understand the HOW i.e. hands-on experience in particular platforms whether it be Salesforce Marketing Cloud (Exact Target), Pardot, Marketo, Eloqua, Silverpop, Adobe Marketing Cloud, Responsys etc.

Even more importantly, organisations are seeking candidates who can answer the WHY i.e. why are we building the campaign? Does it help us achieve our corporate or marketing objectives? Is it aligned to our customer experience vision? Why now? What if we don’t run the campaign? What is the impact? What do we risk losing?

These are the strategy skills needed to be an effective digital and data-driven marketer. Simply knowing how to build and execute a campaign on a particular platform is just not enough.

Therefore, before you start with your vendor product certifications, our advice would be to learn how to start with the WHY? Get the digital transformation skills you need to show your organisation how to get faster time to value with their investment in their marketing technology stack.
